ECT Trainings and Fellowships

International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation

The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN) offers an annual one-day course in ECT, with examination, for psychiatrists, other physicians, and nurses involved in the administration of ECT. The course includes lectures by noted ECT experts as well as practicums focusing on practical issues in ECT administration. The ISEN course is usually held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association.


Columbia University

The Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute offer a visiting one-week fellowship designed for psychiatrists, registered nurses, and other mental health providers to enhance their knowledge of ECT. The objectives of the course are to provide the attendees with the skills required to perform state-of-the-art ECT and administer an ECT service.


Duke University

Duke Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences offers the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Practical Virtual Course, a virtual three-day training experience, four times per year. This course follows in the footsteps of our former on-site Duke ECT course, which trained more than 1,000 psychiatrists from throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. It focuses on providing educational content directly relevant to administering ECT. Registration will be capped to allow for interactive learning and discussion.


Emory University

The Department of Psychiatry at Emory University offers a 3-day, mini-fellowship in ECT. The course is intended for psychiatrists interested in developing an ECT service and understanding the procedures for the administration of ECT.


Medical University of South Carolina

The Brain Stimulation Laboratory at the Medical University of South Carolina offers one-week intensive training courses in either ECT or TMS. Courses are usually held in the spring and fall. Successful completion of the ECT course leads to a training certificate in advanced ECT. This course is intended for psychiatrist interested in either in clinical or research applications of ECT.


University of Michigan

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan offers a one-week program in ECT for those new to this modality, and one- or two-day refresher courses for experienced practitioners. The courses involve observation of ECT treatments as well as reading and lectures. The program is tailored for those physicians who are interested in establishing their own ECT program or who wish to update their ECT skills and knowledge.


University of Pittsburgh

The Visiting Fellowship in ECT is offered four times each year and provides practitioners with a one-week intensive training in the clinical delivery of ECT at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital. Enrollment is limited to four physicians and two psychiatric nurses for each scheduled program.
